Create an exotic feel in your garden with the gorgeous agapanthus ‘Poppin Purple’. A new reblooming variety, ‘Poppin Purple’ will bloom continuously from June right through to September, with buds that are dark purple and explode into incredibly beautiful violet flowers. Like all Agapanthus, it is happiest when planted in rich, well-drained soil in full sun or partial shade.
Top Tips
- You will often get more flowers when the roots are restricted, so this is certainly a plant that does better in a pot, which also makes it easier to protect during the winter.
Care Guide
- Water your potted plant well.
- Dig a hole a little deeper and 3 x wider than the nursery pot.
- Add a soil conditioner such as well-rotted manure to the earth removed from the hole if necessary.
- Remove the plant from its pot and tease out a few of the roots.
- Place your plant in the hole at the same level at the pot.
- Refill the hole with the earth removed (backfilling).
- Firm in the spoil with you heel, avoiding the root ball.
- Feed with a general-purpose fertiliser monthly from spring until flowering, then, from the end of September reduce watering and feeding to allow the foliage to harden.
- In colder parts of the UK, cover the crown of the plant with a deep, dry mulch to protect the plants from hard frosts, or grow in a pot so they can be overwintered in an unheated greenhouse.
