The eye-catching, violet-blue flowers of the ‘Caribbean Lily’ Scilla peruviana adds a hint of the Mediterranean to any garden. Perfect for adding a splash of colour to beds and borders when tulips have started to fade and right before perennials spark to life.
Top Tips
In the wild, the bulbs grow at or just above the soil surface, so to copy these conditions, plant the bulbs shallowly so the very tip of the bulb is right at the soil surface, spaced about 20-25cm (8-10in) apart.
Care Guide
- Scilla peruviana should be grown in well-drained soil with added grit or sharp sand. The Peruvian lily will not tolerate soil that is heavy and waterlogged.
- During the summer months, the soil should stay as dry as possible while the bulbs are dormant, then, when in growth, plants will need regular watering before, during and right after flowering.

- In colder areas, Scilla peruviana can be grown in containers. Plant the bulbs as above and feed before and immediately after flowering.
- Once the foliage fades, stop watering and put the pot in a protected area where it won?t get too much rain. Bring the container indoors in autumn to protect the bulbs from cold.
