English Bluebells are a perfect choice for creating eye-catching displays in any spring garden. With a stunning indigo blue colour and a sweetly fragrant perfume, they boldly herald the arrival of warmer weather. They are also bee-friendly, so are great for attracting wildlife to your garden. Fully hardy, they will come back year after year with bigger and better displays.
Top Tips
- Plant as soon as you receive your bulbs, as early as you can in autumn so that the bulbs can establish a good root system before winter.
Care Guide
- Plant bulbs in groups in early autumn, with the pointed growing tip upwards, 10-15cm deep, 10cm apart, allowing room for clumps to naturalise and spread.
- They thrive in well-drained soils, rich in organic matter. Apply an organic mulch to improve poor soil and water well after planting.
- Best in dappled shade around the bases of trees and deciduous shrubs, or plant in grass or woodland, where they will naturalise easily. They are tolerant of full sun through to full shade.
- If planting in grass, avoid mowing until the leaves have died back.
- Bluebells can become overcrowded after a few years. Lift the bulbs after flowering and divide offsets and large clumps for replanting.
- Add mycorrhizal fungi to the roots before planting to encourage faster and more reliable establishment.
