Phyllostachys aureocaulis (Yellow bamboo) has long, slender, golden-yellow stems, which form strange zigzag patterns as they grow, providing an interesting twist and instant impact! Not only that, but the stems have beautifully contrasting red highlights when grown in the sun.
A tall-growing, evergreen variety, it forms attractive and long-lasting clumps, so is ideal for hedges or screening ? great for patio or barbecue areas. It will add an exotic element to your garden and makes a lovely rustling sound in a breeze.
This bamboo is vigorous and slowly invasive, so best in large pots, or with plenty of space in lawns, but if you are planting near a wall or foundations, remember to use a physical barrier.
It weathers very well in hot summer or cold winter. Very hardy, it needs little care, so is perfect for busy gardeners. Just make sure your plants are well-watered in summer and don’t let them dry out if you are growing yours in a pot.
Supplied in a 1.5L pot ready to plant out or re-pot.
Top Tips
- Remove lower leaves to show off the canes to their best.
- Best in a large container, but if you need to plant in the garden, ensure that a physical barrier is placed around the roots to stop them invading surrounding areas.
Care Guide
- As Phyllostachys aureocaulis grows vigorously, it needs to be pruned regularly to prevent from spreading further than desired.
- In the spring, unwanted or spindly canes should be cut down to ground level. New shoots can also be pruned once they grow taller than the rest of the plant if you wish to maintain a compact size.
